吳杏芬

吳杏芬（1853–1930），名淑娟，號杏芬老人，自署杏芬女士，安徽歙縣人。幼時隨父吳鴻勳寓滬賣畫、習畫，承襲傳統水墨，專長花鳥、山水、仕女等。後受五四運動思潮啟蒙，加入當時上海專業畫會，提出革新主張，與畫家切磋，以畫藝表達內心所感，反映社會現實，鼓舞人心。1910年作品曾參加義大利博覽會。1925年與吳昌碩、王一亭等人同獲聘為上海城東女校圖畫專修科教授，為近代上海著名女畫家之一。

Wu Xing-fen (1853-1930), born Wu Shujuan, also styled herself Xing-fen Laoren and signed her works Xing-fen Nüshi. She was a native of She County, Anhui Province. In her youth, she moved to Shanghai with her father, Wu Hongxun, learning to paint while supporting his art trade. Well-versed in traditional ink painting, she specialized in flower-and-bird motifs, landscapes, and figure paintings of women. Later inspired by the intellectual wave of the May Fourth Movement, Wu joined professional Shanghai art societies, advocating for artistic reform and actively collaborating with her peers. She used her art to express inner reflection, respond to social realities, and inspire the public. In 1911, her work was presented at the Turin International Exhibition in Italy. By 1925, she was appointed alongside renowned masters Wu Changshuo and Wang Yiting to teach in the specialized painting department at Shanghai Chengdong Girls’ School, cementing her legacy as one of modern Shanghai’s leading female painters.
