Fan Tchun-pi (1898–1986) was a native of Minhou, Fujian Province. Studying in France, she trained at the Académie Julian in Paris, the École des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux, and the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. She exhibited regularly at the prestigious Paris Salons. Her painting The Flute Player (La Joueuse de Flûte) featured on the cover of the French art magazine Les Annales politiques et littéraires, earning her international recognition as a standout female painter from the East. Upon returning to China in 1925, Fang taught at National Guangdong University and established close artistic ties with the Lingnan School of painting. Alongside Pan Yuliang and Sun To-ze, she was celebrated as one of the leading innovative women artists of the Republican era. In 1966, NMH hosted a major retrospective titled “Fan Tchun-pi Solo Exhibition” in its National Gallery.
Chrysanthemums
Chrysanthemums is an ink and color on paper painting by Fan Tchun-pi. Rendered in a spontaneous, freehand style, the work depicts two prominent chrysanthemums, one yellow and one white, blooming side by side. The painter created the lush petals and leaves using the “mogu (boneless)” technique, painting without outlined contours. Subtle variations in brushstroke length, curvature, ink tonality, and color produce a rich and expressive rhythm throughout the composition. In Chinese culture, the chrysanthemum symbolizes nobility, purity, longevity, and auspicious blessing. Standing in resilient bloom against the biting frost of late autumn, it has long served as a poetic emblem of steadfast integrity and detachment from material fame. Recognized alongside the plum blossom, orchid, and bamboo as one of the “Four Gentlemen,” the flower was frequently chosen by literati scholars to reflect their own moral character and ideals. The artist donated this work to the NMH following her solo exhibition at NMH in 1968.
