Pan Yu-lin

1899–1977

Pan Yu-lin (1899–1977), born Zhang Yu-lin in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, was orphaned at a young age and forced into a brothel. Her life changed dramatically when Pan Zanhua, a local salt official, purchased her freedom and took her as his concubine, leading her to adopt his surname. Following her marriage, Pan embarked on her formal art education, studying at the Shanghai Art Academy, the Institut Franco-Chinois de Lyon, and the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma. She later returned to head the Western Painting Department at the Shanghai Art Academy. In 1937, she relocated to Paris, where she lived for forty years and earned official accolades from the French government. Celebrating her pioneering spirit, art historians count her alongside artists such as Fang Tchun-pi and Sun To-ze among the “Six Leading New Women Painters of Republican China.” She shared a close artistic camaraderie with Xu Bei-hong during their time in France and maintained a lifelong friendship with Yuan Chu-sheng. Recognizing her profound legacy, NMH presented “The Joint Exhibition of Sanyu and Pan Yuliang” in 1995, followed by the landmark retrospective “Pan Yu-lin: The Painting Soul” in 2006.

Nude

Nude is an oil painting by Pan Yu-lin in 1952. Rendered in strong black outlines filled with calligraphic tension, the crisscrossing brushstrokes cover the composition in a style characteristic of her color-ink works. The seated figure leans gently on a red floral cushion, holding a book in her left hand while her right hand rests effortlessly on her left ankle. Her expression is serene and focused, completely absorbed in the joy of reading. The subtle upturn of her lips and tranquil countenance faintly evoke the poise and vitality of Western classical sculpture. Transferred to NMH by the Ministry of Education in 1984, the painting is an essential highlight of the collection.
